A Metaheuristic-Based Micro-Grid Sizing Model with Integrated Arbitrage-Aware Multi-Day Battery Dispatching

Rule-based micro-grid dispatch strategies have received significant attention over the last two decades. However, a recent body of literature has conclusively shown benefits operational scheduling optimisation while optimally sizing micro-grids. This is commonly referred to as design and co-optimisation (MGDCO). far can be ascertained, all existing MGDCO models in consider 24-h-resolved day-ahead timeframe for associated optimal energy processes. That is, intelligent, look-ahead multi-day timeframes are generally absent from wider relevant literature. In response, this paper introduces novel modelling framework that integrates an arbitrage-aware linear programming-based strategy into standard metaheuristic-based investment planning Importantly, model effectively extends mainstream problems by producing solutions aware scenarios three days. Based on numeric simulation results obtained test-case micro-grid, effectiveness proposed optimisation-based processes verified, retaining computational tractability. Specifically, comparing framework, which uses formulated 72-h strategies, with business-as-usual methods demonstrated it reduce micro-grid’s whole-life cost up 8%. Much outperformance method attributed effective use behind-the-meter Li-ion battery storage, improves overall system flexibility.
